Federal Skilled Worker Class (FSWC)


The Federal Skilled Worker Program is Canada’s immigration category for employed professionals, as set by the federal government.

The Federal Skilled Worker Class opens on May 4, 2013. Only a total of 5,000 applications will be processed, with a cap of 300 per each occupation. We expect this quota to be met very quickly, so applicants must act fast!

  • Financial and investment analysts
  • Engineering managers
  • Civil engineers
  • Mechanical engineers
  • Chemical engineers
  • Mining engineers
  • Geological engineers
  • Petroleum engineers
  • Aerospace engineers
  • Computer engineers (except software engineers/designers)
  • Computer programmers and interactive media developers
  • Medical laboratory technologists
  • Medical laboratory technicians and pathologists' assistants
  • Medical radiation technologists
  • Medical sonographers
  • Cardiology technicians and electrophysiological diagnostic technologists, n.e.c. (not elsewhere classified)
  • Geoscientists and oceanographers
  • Land surveyors
  • Industrial instrument technicians and mechanics
  • Inspectors in public and environmental health and occupational health and safety
  • Audiologists and speech-language pathologists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Occupational Therapists
The FSWC new points system is as follows:

A minimum level of language proficiency will be required – that level is initially expected to be at the Canadian Language Benchmark 7 (CLB 7). Essentially, the following IELTS scores will be required by English speakers in order to be eligible and apply:

Listening: 7.0 Reading: 6.0 Writing: 6.0 Speaking: 6.0

CIC has stated that under the new program, in order to receive points for education, applicants will need to have their educational credentials evaluated by either designated organizations or professional bodies for regulated occupations. Applicants whose credentials do not exist in Canada as well as those who do not have a credential equivalent to a completed Canadian credential would not be eligible for the FSWC.

Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC)


The Federal Skilled Trades Class is a new category designed to make it easier for skilled tradespeople to immigrate to Canada.The new FSTC is open to skilled tradespersons with experiencein the following occupational areas:

Industrial, Electrical and Construction Trades
Maintenance and Equipment Operation Trades
Supervisors and Technical Occupations in Natural Resources
Agriculture and Related Production
Processing, Manufacturing and Utilities Supervisors and Central Control Operators
Chefs and Cooks, and Bakers and Butchers

In order to be eligible, applicants must have:

- A qualifying offer of employment from up to two employers in Canada of at least one year duration or a Certificate of Qualification from a provincial or territorial Apprenticeship Authority
- Language proficiency up to a certain threshold – expected to be CLB 5 – minimum IELTS score of 5.0 in all factors except Reading, where 4.0 is sufficient
- 24 months of work experience (after qualification/certification in the country where the work was performed, where applicable) in the same skilled trade in the last 5 years; and
- Qualifications that satisfy employment requirements as described by the National Occupation Classification, except for certification and licensing requirements, which are difficult to obtain outside Canada
